The pact film analysis

Mise-en-scene -   Make-up is a key aspect of mise-en-scene within 'The Pact ' trailer. The  use of grey and white colours on the teenage girls face portraying that she is possessed by an evil force. Although the colour white could signify the girls innocence and purity, the use of dark colours such as black contrast this creating a sence of  struggle between 'good' and 'evil'. The Mise-en scene is also used effectively to create an air of suspence through the use of prop. At the start of the video the woman is seen talking to her daughter through the laptop. The use of the laptop in the trailer could signify a sense of isolation and make the audience suspect an evil presence, typical of the conventions of the horror trailer. By using the voice of a child in the trailer it reinforces the corruption of innocence, again associated with the horror genre. The prop of a cross is also used within the trailer as a religious symbol, signifying a sense of evil. The scene is set using low key lighting throughout the clip, however this is heavily used in the later scenes along with blackouts and fast paced editing.

Sound-  Ambient sound is used throughout the trailer, through the sound of heavy breathing and screams, these noises are associated with fear and therefore a typical convention of the horror genre. This sense of fear is also shown through the use of diagetic sound, primarily through the voice of the main character. As the main character is a woman, this is an important aspect of the trailer itself. Women are stereo typically seen in films as the 'weaker sex' therefore her voice itself portrays vulnerability and a sense of fear this is shown through her voice ' can you see mummy? this shows a sense of uncertainty. A sound bridge of a high pitched squeal is used in the trailer as this scene reaches a climax, the sound bridge links the scene where a 'supernatural' figure is shown and then flashes too a blackout editing technique, this creates suspense within the trailer and adds continuity. The sound near the end of the trailer is also make to sound shaky, this matches the handheld camera scene showing a supernatural appearance has occurred.

Editing- Blackouts are frequently used within the trailer to create suspense between each scene, the colour black also symbolizes death and signifies a supernatural occurrence. The blackouts are featured next to a fade out editing technique which cuts from scene to scene creating continuity and highlights the order of supernatural occurrences. There is also a scene within the trailer where the girls body elevates, and is dragged, this special effect is used to make the girl look as if she is being possessed. This scene is accompanied by the screen flashing, and fast paced editing to create tension and suspense associated with the horror genre.

Camera work- A panning shot is used at the beginning of the trailer to zoom into the scene, the camera zooms into the doorway. The doorway symbolizes mystery and the unknown, therefore the zooming into the doorway creates an edgy and unnerving atmosphere to the audience. A tracking shot is also used within the trailer during the opening scene when the woman is talking to her daughter through the laptop. The tracking shot is in medium view and highlights the woman's surroundings, the shot type also shows the expression on the womans face as the supernatural appearances occur, this highlights a sense of fear to the audience. A handheld camera is also used during the part when the child says 'Who's that behind you?', this heightens the tense atmosphere in the scene as the shakiness o the handheld almost has a 'live' viewing effect, and portrays a sense of fear to the audience.
